I’d like to briefly inform you about some concepts we will cover in first grade. Our phonics program is a continuation of the kindergarten series entitled “Fundations.” “Fundations” is a highly structured and intensive approach to decoding, reading, and spelling. “Fundations” teaches the foundational skills of the Common Core Standards in reading, writing, speaking, listening and language. Students are introduced to phonics rules, vocabulary, and trick words.
We will be using School Wide for Reading. I will also be meeting in small groups with children for guided reading. Our reading and writing is rigorous and is aligned with the Common Core Standards. Our writing is narrative, opinion, and informational.
Our math series is called “Bridges.” In addition, students participate in math stations, fluency activities, and guided math practice. Here is a link that you can click on that will have everything we learn in first grade for math. There are things such as overviews and extra practice games. When you click on the link, please make sure you are hitting the first grade button.
With the little remaining time left in the day, students will also have science and social studies.
Homework is given on a daily basis Monday through Thursday.
~Your child is expected to read his/her baggie book on a daily basis. It is the child's responsibility to read for 15 minutes nightly. Please log minutes daily with parent signature.
~Homework is expected to be returned the next school day. If it is returned on time, students earn a "+2." If it is returned late, a student will earn a "+1." This provides good communication between teacher, parent and student.
Students are expected to return their “ Take Home Folder” to school daily. It is our communication link between home and school. When you send notes, forms, or any important papers to school put it in your child’s “Take Home Folder”. Please check your child’s folder daily for homework and notes.
